POSITION: READING ROOM PROGRAM ASSOCIATE
Organization Profile
Room to Read's mission is to provide the most previously disadvantaged children with an opportunity to gain the lifelong gift of education. The organization was founded on the belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and taking control of one's own life. We currently work in Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate all of their children equally. In 2006, we began our expansion into Africa,
establishing projects in South Africa and in 2007 began to establish ourselves in Zambia.
Room to Read (RtR) is a results-driven organization that seeks to intervene early in a child's life to provide ongoing educational opportunities in their communities. We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based
organizations to implement our programs. We have developed a successful approach to building educational infrastructure and opportunities which consists of:
Partnering with communities to build schools through challenge grants
Establishing bi-lingual libraries
Publishing local language children's books
Establishing computer and language labs
Providing long-term scholarships to girls
Since our inception, Room to Read's worldwide team has celebrated the opening of our 3800th library, the donation of our two millionth book, and our fourth consecutive year winning the Fast Company Monitor Group Social Capitalist award. To date, we have impacted the lives of over 1.3 million children. Room to Read has an annual budget of approximately US$12 million, and our global staff will number over 175 by the end of
2007. Our global headquarters is located in San Francisco, and we have program offices in Colombo, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Lusaka, New Delhi, Phnom Penh, Tshwane (formerly known as Pretoria), and Vientiane.
Our long-term goal is to help 10 million children to gain the lifelong gift of education.
Room to Read South Africa started its operations in October 2006. We are currently working with 65 primary and secondary schools in the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga where we are establishing Reading Rooms (libraries). With the goal of increasing children’s access to book, we have also published 3 books in local languages through our Local Language Publishing Program. We plan to release two new titles in the
beginning of 2008.
Position Overview
The Reading Room Program Associate (RRPA) will assist and report directly to the Reading Room Program Officer (RRPO). S/he will provide assistance to the RRPO in implementing the Reading Room programme.
Primary responsibilities will include procuring, organizing and preparing books for distribution to Room to Read (RtR) Reading Rooms.
Additional duties towards fulfilling objectives of the programme will be determined as needed.
Position: based in Mpumalanga with occasional travelling to other provinces
General Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in surveying and selecting schools that are in need and meet the RtR selection criteria for Reading Rooms.
Assist in analyzing and assessing applications and/or proposals from schools and make recommendations for programmatic implementation.
Make regular visits to project sites to supervise, monitor and support the local partners and educators.
Assist in gathering information for reports on the status and progress of our Reading Room programs.
Assist in hosting donor site visits as needed and document anecdotes that evolve through field work.
Make recommendations on improving the Reading Room program’s impact and ustainability in schools and communities, with particular focus on maximizing quality and the community’s challenge grant contribution.
Support local and outside volunteers/mobilisers in order to ensure support for the programme.
Participate in any other activities which may be required to be undertaken to fulfill the objectives of RtR South Africa.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in coordinating and facilitating training workshops for Reading Room librarians or teachers.
Identify, categorize and enter suitable books and materials into a database for Reading Rooms supported by RtR South Africa.
Assist in procurement of books, furniture, library stationery and other supplies from different sources and develop a package of materials for the Reading Rooms.
Assist in receiving, sorting and storing donated English-language books.
Maintain an inventory of books and track distribution to schools and partners.
Work with appropriate staff to organize the packaging of books and supplies and their distribution to beneficiary schools and partners.
Represent RtR in different forums and advocate the importance of reading and the need for Reading Rooms for children.
Qualifications Required
Bachelor's degree/diploma from an accredited university program in South Africa preferably in Library and Information Science or equivalent.
Demonstrated computer literacy.
Ability to travel frequently within and to provinces throughout South Africa.
Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and 2 or more local languages.
Valid Code B driver’s licence.
Preferred Prior experience living and/or working in rural areas.
Prior experience working with schools, teachers, administrators and government officials.

SA Library Week 2008 - Theme and dates
S A Library Week will be celebrated during the week of 17 to 22 March 2008, with the theme “From local to global @ your library. “
The theme has been inspired by the story of Neal Petersen, the South African yachtsman who was the first black man to sail solo around the world, who says that he would not be where he is today without libraries. Growing up as a young boy on the Cape Flats, he discovered sailing and the art of navigation through books in his local public library and from there truly went from local to global through his
library.
Libraries bridge the world and are places of opportunity, as Neal testifies. Libraries are about more than having access to information; it is about what one does with that information and where it can take one. Imagine a young boy discovering books about sailing; a university student doing research; an academic finding the latest research through resources made available by the library; the budding entrepreneur getting guidance on how to set a business up; the young schoolgirl
locating information for her research, or an unemployed person posting his/her curriculum vitae (cv) on to websites using the computer provided by the public library or emailing in response to an advertisement he read in the newspaper at his library.
Libraries are also about reading and encouraging a culture of reading, enabling one to explore the world and to broaden one’ s horizons … “going from local to global”. Think about the internationally published writers who started out by attending writing workshops at their public library; there are the literacy classes run by libraries. What of the steel trunk and container libraries of Biblionef taking
books to the rural areas? What about the project by the National Library of South Africa to publish and disseminate more books in indigenous languages? The examples are endless.
As the Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Pallo Jordan reminded us in his keynote speech at the Opening Ceremony of the IFLA/World Library and Information Congress, the eighth clause of the Freedom Charter says “The doors of learning and culture shall be opened” and continues “All the cultural treasures of mankind shall be open to all, by free exchange of books, ideas and contact with other lands”. And where better than @ your library where one can go from local to global through books,
internet and other electronic and digital media? Libraries are indeed places which allow people to go beyond themselves; that bridge the world and provide opportunities to access to a world of information and other cultures.
The national launch of SA Library Week 2008 will be hosted by Mpumalanga. It takes place on Saturday 15th March 2008 at the Kruger National Park. More details will follow closer to the time.

Grants for research and development projects 2008
The SALI Trust, established after the dissolution of the South African Institute for Librarianship and Information Science (SAILIS), has the following objectives:
To promote the common interest of persons carrying on the profession or occupation of librarianship and information work within the Republic of South Africa; and in doing so
To develop librarianship and information studies in order that library and information services of a high standard may be rendered by all persons active in the Library and Information Sector in the Republic of South Africa.
In line with these objectives the Trust annually offers at least one grant each (maximum R40,000) in the fields of (1) research and of (2) development in librarianship and information work in South Africa, for projects which, according to the Trustees, will best contribute to the realisation of the above objectives. The Trust reserves the right not to make any grants from the applications received.
Applications should clearly state
the objective of the project, including the expected end result and the effect it could have on the South African library and information profession or service
full biographical details of the applicant, the person responsible for the project and others to be involved, including the nature of their work and their employers
the proposed methodology/activities
the envisaged programme/time-frame for completion
a detailed budget, with an indication of funding received or applied for from other sources. (Please note that the Trust will not make grants available to pay grantees for their time, or for the payment of salaries, nor for the purchase of computers or other equipment)
NB Failure to adequately provide the above information could lead to disqualification.

Call for LIASA Conference 2008 Local Arranging Committee
In 2008, the Western Cape Branch will be hosting the 10th Annual LIASA Conference with the theme: Looking Ahead: the changing role of LIS.
The Conference will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre during the week of 6 to 10 October 2008.
In order to host a successful conference, we, of course, have to start now, and we will need many willing hands.
I would like to invite you to serve on the Local Arranging Committee, which we hope to constitute before the end of October 2007.
Apart from you willingness and availability to serve on this committee, please consider the following:
The Local Arranging Committee meetings will be taking place after-hours, in the evening and weekends. We expect that meetings will become more frequent as we get closer to the conference dates.

World Development Information Day Invitation, Western Cape, kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, 24- 25 October 2007
The General Assembly of the UN instituted World Development Information Day in 1972 to draw the attention of world public opinion to development problems and the need to strengthen international cooperation to solve them. The National Department of Social Development in conjunction with all Provincial Departments of Social Development decided to mark this day in 2007 in order to raise awareness and understanding of Information Management in the Social Development context. The goal of this day is to raise awareness of information as an enabler of sustainable social development with government bodies, service providers, communities and people.
This year World Development Information Day will be celebrated by holding an Indaba at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town.
This promise to be an interesting event on the theme of "Information for development", as well as the launch of development-related information tools. Various speakers from industry, government and academia will give talks on different topics, addressing issues on the use of information as a tool for the development of communities. Papers will cover topics on how the use of information can contribute to alleviate problems in specific fields of Social Development. During the product launch session new information products, which will simplify service delivery, will be showcased. People working in the information management and knowledge fields from government, academia, business, non-profit organizations and non-governmental organizations are invited to attend this free of charge event.

Nancy Pearl is a author, television host and librarian who has a theory that libraries are like three-legged foot stools, and like any good stool, the legs need to be of equal length to provide maximum usefulness and stability. In library terms, those "legs" are technology, reader's advisory services, and outreach and programming. Nancy Pearl is a author, television host and librarian who has a theory that libraries are like three-legged foot stools, and like any good stool, the legs need to be of equal length to provide maximum usefulness and stability. In library terms, those "legs" are technology, reader's advisory services, and outreach and programming. Join Pearl on October 16 for a webchat during which she will advocate that more attention be paid to the latter two services in order to keep our libraries at the center of their communities.

Internet Information Retrieval Course in Stellenbosch
The next Internet Information Retrieval and Personal Information Management Tools and Techniques short course will be presented again by Knowledge Leadership Associates and the University of Stellenbosch Centre for Knowledge Dynamics on 29 – 30th October 2007 in Stellenbosch.

Part-time LIS programme at UWC
To all who expressed interest in our proposed part-time BBibl to start
in 2008.
The good news is that we have received over 20 expressions of interest and so can safely proceed. So please now apply formally using the online form on the University of the Western Capes website. Make it clear that you are applying for the part-time programme. You will then be sent a letter of acceptance. Please look out for an email inviting you to a meeting at the end of January 2008 at registration time when we will welcome you & sort out class times. Please note:
* In 2008 we begin with BBibl I and will move on to BBibl II in 2009- and, so on. We cannot cater for those of you who might qualify to enter later years in 2008.
* Your programme in 2008 will comprise at least Library Science 111 in Semester 1 and Library Science 121 in Semester 2 . Each involves 2 lectures per week. You also should enroll for one or two BA subjects, each usually requiring 2 classes per week.
* LS 121 includes a series of computer literacy tuts. But if you are competent in MSWindows & its three applications, wordprocessing, spreadsheets and databases, then you might want to apply to be tested for exemption from these tuts. We will inform you how to go about this in the course of the year.
* Lectures are normally held between 5.30 and 8.30 pm. But we are open to your suggestions. If the majority of you prefer an early morning slot then we could manage that.
* In 2009 we probably will be introducing a new BLIS degree.
The courses you will do in 2008 will count towards this fresh new degree. And you will be transferred into the new degree.

to reflect on the service provision during the decade and to decide and
plan the next decade.

The Western Cape Branch of LIASA is calling for nominations for the
2007 LIASA Western Cape Branch Award.
The LIASA Western Cape Branch Award recognizes an individual librarian or library team from any library (public, school, academic or special library) who has demonstrated exceptional creativity and resourcefulness in marketing, promoting and advocating for a single library or libraries in the Western Cape.
This award is aimed at recognizing and honouring the librarians for their creativity in the promotion and marketing of, as well as advocating for their libraries, through innovative and imaginative programmes, projects and events.
What type of programmes or projects would be considered?
We are looking for programmes or projects which include the promotion
and expansion or outreach of library services to the community where
it did not exist before or in response to community needs. These could
include:-
a.. support for educational programmes
b.. library programmes including promotion of library resources
c.. literacy, literature and reading programmes
d.. community outreach
e.. building or strengthening of local political, fiscal and public support
Criteria
All nominations will be evaluated on the following criteria:-
1. how innovative and imaginative the marketing was
2. the obstacles and challenges faced,
3. the partnerships developed
4. how creatively resources were used
5. the results obtained (outcomes)
6. how the library is using these results
7. sustainability
Only programmes or projects carried out from January to December 2006
are eligible.

If an individual librarian is nominated, he/she should be a current
paid-up (2007) individual LIASA member. In the case of a library team
being nominated, at least one member of the library team should be a
current paid-up (2007) individual member.

Judging Panel
The judging panel will comprise the Chair of the Western Cape Branch
of LIASA; the Public Relations Officer of the Western Cape Branch of
LIASA, or any other member of the Western Cape Branch Executive Committee;
the convenor or a representative from each of the active Western Cape
interest groups; Rheina Epstein, donor; and an independent marketing
specialist.
The decision of the judging panel is final, and no correspondence will
be entered into.
What do you need to do to enter?
1.. You must be a current paid-up (2007) member of LIASA or at least
one member of your team needs to a current paid-up member.
2.. You or your library team must be nominated by a current paid-up
(2007) member of LIASA. Each nomination must be accompanied by a
written motivation.
3.. Only programmes or projects carried out from January to December
2006 are eligible.
4.. Together with the proposer's written motivation, you need to
submit a portfolio which includes:-
a.. A written description of the programme expanding on the planning and execution, obstacles and challenges faced, the resources
used and the results obtained
b.. Statistical information about the library, including the community served, circulation figures and staffing must be included as this will be helpful in giving context to the written submission
c.. Supporting material such as brochures, testimonials, press clippings, flyers and photographs should be included to substantiate the nomination. (These will not be returned as they will be used in other advocacy or marketing activities by the Branch and relevant interest groups.)
5.. The individual or representative of the team that has been nominated should be available to provide further information either through interviews or site visits.

The South African Library for the Blind (Blindlib), which is situated in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, is a statutory institution registered under Act 91 of 1998. It is our mission to provide a free national library and information service to all blind and print handicapped readers in South Africa.

BRAILLIST
Minimum requirements: A Diploma or equivalent recognised qualification in Secretarial/Office Administration plus 3 years working experience in an office environment; excellent command of the English language is essential and fluency in either Afrikaans or Xhosa will be an advantage; accurate typing skills (55 wpm), computer literacy including proven formal training on MS Office Suite and good organisational skills are also essential; willingness to learn Braille and pass a Braille Transcribers examination in February 2008; ability to work independently as well as part of a team in an open office environment on predominantly routine tasks.

The Western Cape Branch of LIASA is calling for nominations for the
2007 LIASA Western Cape
Branch Award.
The LIASA Western Cape Branch Award recognizes an individual librarian
or library team from any library (public, school, academic or special
library) who has demonstrated exceptional creativity and resourcefulness
in marketing, promoting and advocating for a single library or
libraries in the Western Cape.
This award is aimed at recognizing and honouring the librarians for
their creativity in the promotion and marketing of, as well as
advocating for their libraries, through innovative and imaginative
programmes, projects and events.
What type of programmes or projects would be considered?
We are looking for programmes or projects which include the promotion
and expansion or outreach of library services to the community where
it did not exist before or in response to community needs. These could
include:-
a.. support for educational programmes
b.. library programmes including promotion of library resources
c.. literacy, literature and reading programmes
d.. community outreach
e.. building or strengthening of local political, fiscal and public
support
Criteria
All nominations will be evaluated on the following criteria:-
1. how innovative and imaginative the marketing was
2. the obstacles and challenges faced,
3. the partnerships developed
4. how creatively resources were used
5. the results obtained (outcomes)
6. how the library is using these results
7. sustainability
Only programmes or projects carried out from January to December 2006
are eligible.
Who may be nominated?
If an individual librarian is nominated, he/she should be a current
paid-up (2007) individual LIASA member. In the case of a library team
being nominated, at least one member of the library team should be a
current paid-up (2007) individual member.

individuals or library teams. Each entry must be accompanied by a
written motivation from the nominator.
Judging Panel
The judging panel will comprise the Chair of the Western Cape Branch
of LIASA; the Public Relations Officer of the Western Cape Branch of
LIASA, or any other member of the Western Cape Branch Executive Committee;
the convenor or a representative from each of the active Western Cape
interest groups; Rheina Epstein, donor; and an independent marketing
specialist.
The decision of the judging panel is final, and no correspondence will
be entered into.
What do you need to do to enter?
1.. You must be a current paid-up (2007) member of LIASA or at least
one member of your team needs to a current paid-up member.
2.. You or your library team must be nominated by a current paid-up
(2007) member of LIASA. Each nomination must be accompanied by a

4.. Together with the proposer's written motivation, you need to
submit a portfolio which includes:-
a.. A written description of the programme expanding on the

this will be helpful in giving context to the written submission
c.. Supporting material such as brochures, testimonials, press
clippings, flyers and photographs should be included to substantiate
the nomination. (These will not be returned as they will be used in other
advocacy or marketing activities by the Branch and relevant interest
groups.)
5.. The individual or representative of the team that has been
nominated should be available to provide further information either through
interviews or site visits.

Institute on Scholarly Communication, hosted by the Consortium of
Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) December 5-7,
2007, in Chicago. This immersive learning experience, sponsored
jointly by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the
Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), prepares
participants to become local experts within their libraries.
Participants, who are encouraged to attend in teams, will become
fluent with scholarly communication issues and trends and will
begin developing outreach plans for their campuses.
Acceptance to the Illinois ARL/ACRL Institute on Scholarly
Communication is competitive; participation is limited to 100 to
ensure an environment that fosters group interaction and active
participation. Institutions from Illinois will receive preferred
consideration, and a minimum of 20 seats are available to

Institute on Scholarly Communication, hosted by the Consortium of
Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) December 5-7,
2007, in Chicago. This immersive learning experience, sponsored
jointly by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the
Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), prepares
participants to become local experts within their libraries.
Participants, who are encouraged to attend in teams, will become
fluent with scholarly communication issues and trends and will
begin developing outreach plans for their campuses.
Acceptance to the Illinois ARL/ACRL Institute on Scholarly
Communication is competitive; participation is limited to 100 to
ensure an environment that fosters group interaction and active
participation. Institutions from Illinois will receive preferred
consideration, and a minimum of 20 seats are available to
participants outside the state. Applications will be accepted

Articles dealing with "Children's Literature and Reading"
The due date for articles dealing with "Children's Literature and reading" to be published in Mousaion has been extended until 14 September 2007.
Mousaion, a journal on Librarianship and Information Science, will publish a special edition on children's literature and children's reading at the end of 2007.
All scholars, researchers and practitioners working in these multidisciplinary subject fields, e.g. disciplines such as education, sociology, psychology, antrhopology, languages, literature, religion and others are invited to submit articles. Literary scholars are welcome to apply their theories as long as the articles are readable and understandable to persons working in other subject fields as well.
Articles should be between 5 000 and 8 000 words and a structured abstract of 200 words should accompany each article. All articles shall be critically reviewed by at least two referees. The due date for the submission of articles for this proposed edication is 31 August 2007. Mousaion is published by the University of South Africa and accredited with the National Department of Education.
Depending on the success of the planned edition, the Editorial board of Mousaion will consider publishing such a special edition on children's literature and children's reading annually.
