Who should attend?:
All those working in archives who want to learn how to take the gaps between the archives to effectively market their archives.
Workshop focus:
The workshop will focus on a more opportunistic approach to the running and survival of an archives. No matter where or when an archives is established within the broader framework of an institution, it is always never at the top of the priority list - in terms of funding, facilities, staffing or location - in fact in terms of it very existence. It is relegated to the typical dusty echelons of a disused space where the stereotypical introvert staff are apparently expected to dote on documents that are no longer part of the institution core functioning. The workshop will emphasize the taking of various initiatives - be they opportunistic or otherwise. These include:
- creating an awareness of the archive and its function
- developing an interest in the collections and research
- augmenting the collections
- providing staff with more diversified functions
- making the archive a more active role player in the broader landscape of the institution
About the presenter:
Prof Karen Leigh Harris is a full professor in the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the University of Pretoria where she teaches both history and heritage and cultural studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. She also holds the position of Director of the University of Pretoria Archives. She has a doctorate in history that specialises in the field of overseas Chinese Studies, a subject on which she has produced numerous articles and papers as well as contributions to both books and international encyclopaedias. She also has a Higher Education Diploma and is accredited with the SA tourism board. She is currently an executive board member of the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas (ISSCO), a board member of the Historical Association of South Africa (HASA), as well as a ministerial appointment to the National Archives Advisory Council. She also holds various editorial positions on academic journals.

Clare Walker elected as Unisa Alumnus of the Year
Clare Walker, Deputy University Librarian (Client Services) at Wits University Library was recently elected as the Alumnus of the Year of the Department of Information Science of the University of South Africa. The Alumnus of the Year Award was instituted in 2005 when the Department had its 50th anniversary, to honour alumni who have achieved milestones in their careers and reached the highest offices in our profession.
Clare completed all her professional Library and Information Science qualifications through Unisa's Department of Information Science: the Higher Diploma in 1977; the BBibl Hons in 1979 and the MBibl with distinction in 1933 on the topic, An enquiry into the status of special librarians in organisations in the Witwatersrand area, under the supervision of professor Anna Louw.
Clare has a long and distinguished career in the Library and Information profession and Unisa is proud to be associated with an Alumni such as her.
The next Alumni Breakfast of the Department will be held at the LIASA Conference in Cape Town in October. Alumni of the Department are once again requested to send their detail to the Department.

The incumbent works as part of a team that supports the library in providing a range of IT services. The prospective employee must have worked in an IT support environment and will thus have a good understanding of IT support needs and a strong customer service orientation. This individual should be able to work independently, accurately and systematically under pressure and should have good communication skills. Persistence in problem solving and ability to multi-task are required attributes.

About the Presenter:
Prof Patrick Ngulube has extensive experience in records and archives management. He worked for seventeen years as a records manager at the National Archives of Zimbabwe. He lectured in records management at the Harare Polytechnic College from 1995 to 2000. He has been a lecturer in records and archives at the University of KwaZulu-Natal since 2000.
Prof Ngulube consulted with Mr B. Abbot for the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, 6-7 August, Arusha, Tanzania in 2003 regarding information and knowledge management. He conducted a records management workshop at the National Research Foundation on 9 July 2003. He was a member of the Archives and Records Management Standards Generating Board of South Africa in the framework of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) from 2000-2001.
Prof Ngulube is an Executive Board member of the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (ESARBICA). He has presented papers on records management locally, nationally and internationally. He has published extensively in scientific journals on information management.

Dr Deonie Botha is a part-time lecturer at the Department of Information Science at the University of Pretoria. She is involved in lecturing Information Science but specialises in Information and Knowledge Management, which she lectures on both pre- as well as postgraduate level.
She graduated from the University of Stellenbosch and obtained a MInf (Masters in Information Science) degree from the University of South Africa (UNISA). In 2002 she obtained a Diploma in Human Resource Management for which she received the Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement from the Centre for Business Management at UNISA. She completed a variety of courses including courses in Competitive Intelligence from the University of Pretoria and the University of Johannesburg. She also completed a course in Sense- and Decision-making at the University of Pretoria as well as a workshop on the Cynefin framework for organizational sensemaking presented by Dave Snowden. Recently she completed her Ph.D. at the University of Pretoria. The theme of her Ph.D. was: The strategic training needs of large South African enterprises.
Dr Botha has participated in several local as well as international conferences and is involved in a variety of knowledge management projects for private companies.

She also completed a course in Sense- and Decision-making at the University of Pretoria as well as a workshop on the Cynefin framework for organizational sensemaking presented by Dave Snowden. Recently she completed her Ph.D. at the University of Pretoria. The theme of her Ph.D. was: The strategic training needs of large South African enterprises.
Dr Botha has participated in several local as well as international conferences and is involved in a variety of knowledge management projects for private companies.
The workshop is being offered as part of the Second Annual Knowledge, Archives and Records Management Conference which will take place from 6-8 May 2008 at The Ranch Protea Hotel, Polokwane, Limpopo, South Africa.

Community Centre initiative in Limpopo - report back
Once again, thank you to those who so willingly gave advice on the setting up of Community Library near Polokwane. I am happy to report progress as follows:
I printed all your emails, went through them with Wilson, and made up presentation folders for him could take to meetings and to the community.
It has been established that the old school buildings, vacated on 1st March, belong to the community and the Chief has approved and supports the project whole-heartedly.
Wilson Semono met with the Limpopo Provincial Library Services (Carol Wienand) at the end of February and secured their support in providing materials and training. Carol has visited the old school with Wilson and they have identified one of the school buildings that will be suitable for the purpose and can be secured.
The community have agreed to provide the furnishings themselves.
Various mailing list members offered materials and these will be followed up as soon as possible.
The big challenge is now to find a way to support 1-2 employees who will be able to run the centre. I have put Wilson in touch with 2 of my contacts through the school. If any one has corporate connections that could be approached, please drop me a line directly and I will pass them on.

If the Library and Information Science community does not accept the challenges offered by the transformation process, it will become the proverbial beast that will cause Library and Information practices to lag behind until they become part of the detritus of lost causes.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Academics, especially those involved in curriculum development, information professionals and anyone interested in the latest trends in access to and use of information.
SYMPOSIUM FORMAT
The programme will consist of invited, oral and poster presentations and a panel discussion on transformation and IT.

LIBRARY WEEK ACTIVITIES AT FREE STATE PROVINCIAL LIBRARY SERVICE
I would like to take this opportunity to share with you what the Free State Provincial Library & Information Service (the Library & Archive Services Directorate of the Free State Department of Sport, Arts and Culture) is doing for SA Library Week 2008:
For 2008, we will have no central event - instead we have provided our 163 public libraries and depots with promotional packages and guidelines, enabling them to host a series of activities at their libraries from 17 - 20 March 2008.
Herewith a taste of activities that were included in the package:
Activity 1: World Map
In line with the "From local to global" part of the theme, libraries were provided with materials to make a World Map to display in their libraries, indicating South Africa (local) and all the countries with their flags and capitals (global) that participated in the 2006 Soccer World Cup.
Activity 2: Soccer Quiz
We provided libraries with materials and guidelines to host a Soccer Quiz on an adult and juvenile level. We provided them with a Quiz booklet with questions on subjects like Soccer Rules, Soccer Heroes & Legends, Particiapting ccountries, General soccer questions etc.
Acticity 3: Colouring-in Jersey
We provided libraries with an information booklet on PSL Soccer clubs as well as templates of the club jerseys for colouring-in purposes. Afterwards, library workers can display all the coloured-in jerseys.
Activity 4: My soccer hero/legend
We provided libraries with an information booklet on (inter)national soccer heroes and legends, as well as guidelines on how to involve a group of children in a "show & tell" session where they can bring a photo or drawing of their soccer hero to the library and share with the group why that person is their hero. The child sticks the photo / drawing onto a Wall of Fame and the library worker reads biographical information from the booklet to the children to support their general knowledge with facts.
Activity 5: On the soccer field with your library
We provided libraries with a soccer bibliography of books available in FS public libraries, a poster and booklet with information on what FIFA is, a template of a soccer player and template of a soccer ball containing the 2008 SA Library Week theme to enable libraries to make a soccer display for Library Week.
We hope that through the above-mentioned activities, we will not only raise the awareness of library users about soccer and the up-coming 2010 World Cup event (applying the SA Library Week theme : "From local to global @ your library"), but also make them aware of the soccer-related information materials available at their local library - the same goes for information on the history and geography of countires that may participate in the World Cup.

The Internet for teacher-librarians
The University of the Western Cape's Department of Library & information Science will be offering a short course, The Internet for teacher-Librarians, from Tuesday 25 March until Saturday, 29 March 2008.
Teachers and school librarians are the ideal participants for this course. No previous knowledge of the Internet is necessary, but basic computer literacy is required. This is an accredited course in the Advanced certificate in Education (ACE): School Librarianship.
Content of the course:
* A brief history of the Internet
* The digital divide
* An overview of the World Wide Web
* Tools for searching the Web
* The invisible Web
* Web search strategies
* Checklists for evaluating web sites
* Plagiarism and the Web
* Information overload
The cost of the course is R1200. Costs include teas and course material but exclude lunches. Various cafeterias on campus offer light meals at reasonable prices.

Our first paraprofessional workshop of the year is around conducting successful reference interviews. The reference interview is an art and forms the basis for information provision in all types of libraries. You as an information professional need to understand exactly what the user is asking for to be able to know which information sources to consult, how much information to provide, on which level it should be, and to evaluate the information before supplying it.
The workshop will be conducted at entrance level for students of Library and Information Science, information professionals who just started their career and who do information retrieval. There will be practical examples and the opportunity to practice with other delegates. It is not going to be theoretical.

Louise Mitchell has been part of the Anglo American library (ATD Tech-Know Link) team for 10 years and before that has worked in various academic and public libraries. Over the last 20 years it has become her personal challenge and passion to perfect the art of the reference interview and she is still working on it. She is very actively sharing her knowledge and experience with her colleagues and sets an inspiring example of continious development of one's skills and of the goal to never stop learning and improving.
The services, professionalism and value-add of ATD Tech-Know Link is highly regarded amongst top management at Anglo American. From the level of Anglo Technical Director down, the team's abilities and services is known and more importantly, used. Understanding and knowing the exact information needs of their user base and being able to match it with the most appropriate information sources, in the right amount, format and time is key to their successes. In 2008 the LIASA Mpumalanga Branch will host the Launch of South African Library Week in the Kruger National Park. It has become tradition to launch the Week in a different province of the country every year, highlighting the role that libraries play in a democratic society, advancing literacy and making the basic human right of freedom of access to information a reality. During this period LIASA aims to make all South Africans aware that libraries contribute to nation-building and improving the quality of life of all who use them.
The theme has been inspired by the story of Neal Petersen, the South African yachtsman who was the first black man to sail solo around world, who says that he would not be where he is today without libraries. Growing up as a young boy on the Cape Flats, he discovered sailing and the art of navigation through books in his local public library and there truly went from local to global @ his library.

Would you like to spend two weeks in England learning about the history and future challenges of librarianship? How about if those two weeks were spent at The University of Oxford with sessions held at the historic Bodleian Library, Oxford University Press, many of the university's unique college libraries, as well as the British Library in London?
Co-sponsored by The University of Oxford and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science, this two-week, residential summer program allows library professionals and graduate students to explore the past, present, and future of libraries and librarianship at one of the world's premier educational institutions.
Participants will be staying in the center of Oxford allowing them to immerse themselves in the exciting and historic university city and are free to explore England on the weekend.

WIPO study on copyright exceptions for libraries - survey date extended to 28 February 2008
You are invited to contribute to the WIPO study on copyright exceptions for libraries. In 2006, eIFL libraries took part in the WIPO study on exceptions for blind and visually impaired people.
This study is even more important for us because it is particularly related to libraries.
Professor Kenneth Crews, the author, a well-respected academic in the States, would like to hear your experience working with the copyright law in SA.
1.Does our copyright law allow you to do everything that you need to?
If not, please give some examples.
2.Are there new services that you would like to provide, but can't because of copyright restrictions?
3.Have you experienced problems with our copyright law?
4.Have you worked on any projects that were delayed or stopped because of copyright restrictions?
5.Have you overcome any problems and/or worked together with rights holders to resolve problems?
6.Have any projects been delayed because of copyright, e.g. digitization, institutional repositories, etc.?
7.Have you experienced any technological protection measures embedded in works, e.g. encryption, passwords, etc. on CDs, or other media, which
limit or prevent access?
8.Have you any specific examples where the copyright law has hampered,restricted or prevented you from accessing information or carrying out your duties or offering a service or work?
9.Have you found it difficult to get clearance to reproduce copyright material, e.g. 'orphan works' where rightsowners cannot be traced? If yes, please give some examples.

You are invited to submit proposals for papers & posters that will focus on areas related to the theme of the conference.
The Tenth Annual LIASA Conference provides an opportunity to debate, share and learn about the changing roles of LIS in South Africa, Africa and globally in the new millennium. In South Africa, different LIS sectors have experienced the South African Society in transition. LIASA is entering into its second decade of existence. Funding has been finally made available to the public libraries and will relieve some of the pressure that public librarians have carried for a decade. Academic libraries have gone through a series of changes as a result of the mergers. How well has the LIS sector fared in contributing to a democratic South Africa, nation building and the creation of a society that values and respects diversity? How does the LIS sector position itself for the next decade in the transformed society of South Africa? What is the role of LIS on the African continent in the second decade of the new millennium? What is the role of South African and African LIS in the global space and how can it be realized? Local and international professional colleagues and partners are invited to participate in discussions and workshops around the proposed topics.

African Guest Librarian Programme - Opportunity to join the programme
African Guest Librarian Programme (1 librarian per year)

The Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala, Sweden is announcing an African Guest Librarian programme for 2008. The application deadline is 1 April 2008. The African Guest Librarian Programme is aimed at young professional librarians working in African academic or research libraries with a social science focus. The programme is a mixture of hands-on work experience, study visits and an exchange of skills and ideas. The duration of the programme is 4-6 weeks in Uppsala, Sweden, preferably in the period September – November.

The Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala, Sweden is a research, documentation and information centre on modern Africa aimed at the Nordic countries. It promotes research and studies on Africa within the Nordic countries and encourages co-operation between African and Nordic researchers. It also disseminates information about current African issues. The working languages at the institute are Swedish and English.

The library at the Nordic Africa Institute specialises in contemporary Africa and targets users throughout the Nordic regions. The collections, consisting of approximately 60 000 titles, cover the entire continent with the focus on the social sciences.

Deadline for applications: 1 April 2008
The Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala, Sweden is announcing an African Guest Librarian programme for 2008. The application deadline is 1 April 2008. The African Guest Librarian Programme is aimed at young professional librarians working in African academic or research libraries with a social science focus. The programme is a mixture of hands-on work experience, study visits and an exchange of skills and ideas. The duration of the programme is 4-6 weeks in Uppsala, Sweden, preferably in the period September – November.
