In his speech, he said that libraries make a qualitative difference by enabling individuals to develop "wings of the mind" and thus transcend their circumstances and used the example of Neal Petersen to underscore the importance of libraries in changing people's lives. He took the opportunity to acknowledge the role in this played by Letta Naude, formerly of the Wynberg Public Library now the Head of the Sea Point Library, Cape Town, saluting her brave deeds.
