Conference: Invitation to LIASA Fun Run/Walk

LIASA FUN RUN/WALK

17h30 Monday 6 October 2008

Adventure awaits you around every corner of this cityscape tour of
an historic Cape Town area

Tour the footpaths of academe –
see the mountain in an entirely different perspective –

feast your eyes on picturesque harbour views –
let your imagination take you through centuries of human endeavour –
let your sweat fall on the same cobblestones as your ancestors –

let the spirit(s) of the past carry you to the triumph of the present.

How could you not want to participate in this celebration of physical
prowess?

Enter now – or when you collect your conference packs – or at the startline –

But enter, enter, enter –
Do not ‘watch history in the making”

BE history,
Be part of our inspiring tradition of sweat, tears and blisters – all in
the name of glorious fun.

Medals to be won – fame to last a lifetime (or at least four days)

Come on!! Bring your takkies and a friend.

The camaraderie of group suffering must be experienced to be
appreciated.

Whether you walk or run, you will not be alone – breathless maybe, but
not alone.

Resistance is futile –
Join up now and go with the flow, uphill and downhill,

And uphill and downhill and ……….!

WCape LiSLIG AGM - 18 Sept at 14:00: "Change skills for a changing world"

The Western Cape LiSLIG (Special Libraries) Committee would like to invite you to the

LISLIG AGM - Christine Hermanson will be addressing us on "Change skills for a changing world"

Are you facing another restructuring?
Has your library shrunk/grown/moved/(fill in the blank) in the past few years?
Does your new boss want to completely change your job description?
Do you still remember what it means to be an actual "librarian"?
If any of the above applies to you, then this presentation is for you!

Christine has advised corporate clients on change management for the past nine years, inspiring many people to think creatively and welcome challenges as we adapt to a shifting global society, from a manufacturing-based economy, to one that is high-tech and knowledge-intensive. Alongside her career, she completed her PhD (business and psychology) in 2004, addressing how managers in the corporate environment can think more effectively about problem solving, decision-making, and conflict management in an ever-changing environment. She is passionate about supporting people to not only
embrace change, but to excel in today's complex economic climate.

A new committee will be elected at the AGM, so PLEASE volunteer to serve a term on the committee or nominate somebody (make sure the person is willing to stand). Only 2 of the current committee members are available for re-election, so we are desperate for nominations! Only paid-up members are allowed to vote according to the LiSLIG constitution, so please make sure that your membership fees are paid.

We will serve tea /coffee on arrival and the proceedings will begin at 14:30 sharp.

Venue: SAAO Auditorium (Observatory)
(there will be staff at the gate to direct you to the auditorium)

Date: Thursday 18 September 2008

Time: 14:00 for 14:30 - 16 :00

Cost: no charge

Refreshments will be served courtesy of SABINET

Please RSVP to Alison Garlick at (021) 509-3604 or agarlick@oldmutual.co.za

Communique from President: National Elections Update

The purpose of this email is to update you on the National Elections since my last communique on the National Elections.

As you may recall, we issued a new call for nominations for the following portfolios:-

* National Treasurer
* National Secretary

The closing date was 15 August 2008.

The following nominations were received by the due date, and are valid:-

One nomination was received for the portfolio of National Secretary:-

* Dr Judy Henning

Two valid nominations were received for the portfolio of National Treasurer:-

* Karin Kitching

* Rirhandzu Mhinga

You will recall that in the last round, Karin Kitching was nominated unopposed for this position but unfortunately had to withdraw due to work commitments. Having worked out the challenges, she has reconsidered and is now prepared to serve again.

Given the above and in line with our election procedures as stipulated in our constitution we can conclude that: -

* Since we only received one valid nomination by the closing date (15 August 2008) for the position of National Secretary, Dr Judy Henning is duly elected unopposed to this position.

* Since there are two valid nominations for the position of National Treasurer, an election is to take place.

Ballot papers will be posted to members in due course and will made available on the LIASA website, to be returned by Tuesday 7 October 2008 12 pm either by post, or faxed to Johann Pienaar, the Electoral Officer, or dropped in the sealed ballot box in the LIASA Secretariat Office at the LIASA Conference.

Congratulations to Dr Judy Henning, incoming National Secretary, who joins Rachel More, incoming President, Naomi Haasbroek, President-Elect and Rebecca Senyolo, incoming National PR to take LIASA into its second decade!

Kind regards
