Exciting News - LIASA Subsidized Professional Development Training to Start

LIASA has received sponsorships from two long standing partners to be able to offer subsidized professional development training to its members thus enabling them to continue serving the profession effectively, and so that LIASA fulfills its mandate of providing professional development opportunities to its members.

SABINET has very generously provided a training grant of R500 000 over the next three years for training in all LIASA branches and in the following three areas: Cataloguing, Interlibrary Loans and Management and Leadership.

Other exciting news are the revival of the CICD Project which is also meant to offer different types of subsidized training and development to only public and academic librarians. This project has been given a go ahead for implementation by Carnegie for two years. We are equally grateful that this grant, worth over R2 Million, will also enable LIASA to continue with its professional training and development objective for its members. The CICD Task Team will coordinate the series of workshops, training camps, Conferences, Pre-conference workshops etc. with other training providers.

More details to follow soon.

Information is sought on programmes and education for Music Librarianship.

If you are able to assist, please send your responses to Mari N. Itoh mritoh@asu.aasa.ac.jp
and CC to Hanneke Kuiper hjkuiper@xs4all.nl.

************************************************
I send this e-mail by checking the registration list of IAML Sydney meeting. Could you kindly forward this e-mail to your colleagues in public libraries? Thank you very much.

I talked about my research to develop the music information specialist training program especially for public librarians at the Public Libraries Branch Lunch meeting during Sydney Conference.

As you may have noticed, Hanneke Kuiper, the president of the Public Library Branch, generously posted the following questionnaire last October for my research. The program should be useful not only Japanese public librarians but general librarians in any country.
I received valuable information from UK people so far. I would like to have various examples to see what are needed.

I will be very grateful if you pay a little attention to fill out programs in your country and some of your ideas on it.

Hanneke and I plan to report the results of the questionnaire at Naple meeing.

Below I reposted the questions of the questionnaire on the IAML Toolbox with some explanation.

Please send your response to me and CC to Hanneke .

Questionnaire on Music librarianship and education:
1. What knowledge/ technical skills do you think is necessary as a
music librarian?

catalogs, etc.

2. What knowledge/ technical skills do you think is necessary as a
public librarian?
=> Likewise, please write any knowledge and/ or skills needed to
serve at public libraries. Some of them may be same, but the other

understand local needs, IT skills to deal with different databases,
etc.

3. What trainings/ workshops are provided for music librarians
(or public librarians responsible for music information services)
in your country?
=> Let us know the programs you offer in your country.
Is it possible to send some handouts in English available, if you
have some information?
Are there formal education program?
How do you develop your skills as a music librarian?

4. Who organize the training courses?

Workshop: Marketing your archives

LIASA Limpopo invites you!

Marketing your archives
8 May 2008

Presented by Prof Karen Harris from the University of Pretoria Archives and the National Archives Advisory Council

(A maximum of 30 delegates can be accommodated.)

Who should attend?:

All those working in archives who want to learn how to take the gaps between the archives to effectively market their archives.

Workshop focus:

The workshop will focus on a more opportunistic approach to the running and survival of an archives. No matter where or when an archives is established within the broader framework of an institution, it is always never at the top of the priority list - in terms of funding, facilities, staffing or location - in fact in terms of it very existence. It is relegated to the typical dusty echelons of a disused space where the stereotypical introvert staff are apparently expected to dote on documents that are no longer part of the institution core functioning. The workshop will emphasize the taking of various initiatives - be they opportunistic or otherwise. These include:
- creating an awareness of the archive and its function
- developing an interest in the collections and research
- augmenting the collections
- providing staff with more diversified functions
- making the archive a more active role player in the broader landscape of the institution

About the presenter:

Prof Karen Leigh Harris is a full professor in the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the University of Pretoria where she teaches both history and heritage and cultural studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. She also holds the position of Director of the University of Pretoria Archives. She has a doctorate in history that specialises in the field of overseas Chinese Studies, a subject on which she has produced numerous articles and papers as well as contributions to both books and international encyclopaedias. She also has a Higher Education Diploma and is accredited with the SA tourism board. She is currently an executive board member of the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas (ISSCO), a board member of the Historical Association of South Africa (HASA), as well as a ministerial appointment to the National Archives Advisory Council. She also holds various editorial positions on academic journals.

Registration information:

The workshop is being offered as part of the Second Annual Knowledge, Archives and Records Management Conference which will take place from 6-8 May 2008 at The Ranch Protea Hotel, Polokwane, Limpopo, South Africa.

Request from the Swedish Centre for Easy-to-Read

I serve on the Section Standing Committee of the IFLA Libraries Serving Disadvantaged Persons Section (Section 9). One of the colleagues of the committee has forwarded the following email to me, and I am circulating this to the listserv with his permission.

The so-called easy-to-read material deal with illiteracy and how best to combat this especially where adults are concerned. Easy-to-read is also suitable for the mentally handicapped (adults and children), the deaf, aphasiacs and people with reading and writing difficulties.

If you are interested, please contact Bror Tronbacke at the Swedish Centre for Easy-to-Read at bror.tronbacke@lattlast.se

The email from him reads:

From: bror.tronbacke@lattlast.se
I am interested in making contact with people who would like to know more about the easy-to-Read materials and exploring the possibilities of a joint venture project. There may be a possibility to get support from the governments. I may be contacted via my email above.
Best regards

Community Centre initiative in Limpopo - report back

Once again, thank you to those who so willingly gave advice on the setting up of Community Library near Polokwane. I am happy to report progress as follows:

I printed all your emails, went through them with Wilson, and made up presentation folders for him could take to meetings and to the community.
It has been established that the old school buildings, vacated on 1st March, belong to the community and the Chief has approved and supports the project whole-heartedly.
Wilson Semono met with the Limpopo Provincial Library Services (Carol Wienand) at the end of February and secured their support in providing materials and training. Carol has visited the old school with Wilson and they have identified one of the school buildings that will be suitable for the purpose and can be secured.
The community have agreed to provide the furnishings themselves.
Various mailing list members offered materials and these will be followed up as soon as possible.

The big challenge is now to find a way to support 1-2 employees who will be able to run the centre. I have put Wilson in touch with 2 of my contacts through the school. If any one has corporate connections that could be approached, please drop me a line directly and I will pass them on.

It is initiatives like this that are the good news that we all need. Working together, we can make things happen.

December 2007 LIASA-in-Touch

Due to circumstances beyond the control of LIASA, the bulk mailing of the December 2007 LIASA-in-Touch was not delivered to members by the Post Office. The consignment seems to have disappeared once it had reached the Post Office. It seems that many members did not receive their copies through the mail. The matter is under investigation.

We wish to apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment that the non-delivery caused members. We were looking forward to the issue ourselves with the various report backs and members' impressions on the IFLA/WLIC conference.

Usually, we only place the cover and the first page showing the Table of contents on the LIASA website as a way to alert members to the new issue and to indicate that the issue is on its way. However, because of the circumstances, we have put up the entire December 2007 issue on the webpage for your perusal. The link is here

http://www.liasa.org.za/publications/LIT_Vol8-Issue4_Dec2007_complete.pdf

We will keep members posted on the outcome of the investigation.

2008 Annual Research Symposium: Transformation: The Beauty and the Beast

The Annual Research Symposium meetings are organised by the University of South Africa (UNISA) Library Services and Department of Information Science

DATE: 4 July 2008 (Friday)

VENUE: University of South Africa, Florida Campus, South Africa

GENERAL BACKGROUND:

Transformation becomes inevitable whenever changes take place in a society that wishes to improve its existing state. Although transformation can be challenging, it prompts us to become creative. If the Library and Information Science community does not accept the challenges offered by the transformation process, it will become the proverbial beast that will cause Library and Information practices to lag behind until they become part of the detritus of lost causes.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Academics, especially those involved in curriculum development, information professionals and anyone interested in the latest trends in access to and use of information.

SYMPOSIUM FORMAT

The programme will consist of invited, oral and poster presentations and a panel discussion on transformation and IT.

Knowledge Management Through Stories Workshop - 8 May 2008

“Knowledge Management Through Stories Workshop”
Presented by Dr Peter Tobin from Peter Tobin Consultancy
8 May 2008

Who should attend

Everyone! We may not all be natural storytellers, but we can all appreciate the power of stories to help us to learn: to improve knowledge for ourselves and others. Stories can be used to help people at all levels, from all functions, from all industries and sectors, whether from for-profit or not-for-profit organisations. From the Chief Executive’s office to operations, for the younger or more mature, quiet or outgoing, stories and their use can be an important part of the way we work and improve the performance of yourself, your team and your whole organisation. This workshop is ideal for those looking for a better way to create a smarter organisation, whether they are Knowledge Management practitioners, managers or just interested in how to improve knowledge sharing.

Workshop objectives

After attending the workshop delegates will understand:
Why the use of stories is a powerful knowledge sharing practice
How to improve story-crafting skills in their organisation
How to improve story-telling skills in their organisation
How to improve story-listening skills in their organisation
The practical issues involved in effective use of stories for knowledge sharing

Outline of the Workshop

This interactive and participative one-day workshop will be action-packed and full of fun. Extensive use will be made of multimedia and case-based examples and exercises to share practical examples of how to make effective use of stories to share knowledge.

Sessions will include:

Why stories make great sense
How to build your story
How to tell your story
Helping listeners to listen
Stories implementation checklist
Personal action plan

Delegates will receive

Course notes
Copies of exercises
Personal action plan
How-to checklist
Additional resources list
Certificates of attendance

The workshop is being offered as part of the Second Annual Knowledge, Archives and Records Management Conference which will take place from 6-8 May 2008 at The Ranch Protea Hotel, Polokwane, Limpopo, South Africa.
