The Library at the University of the Western Cape is a major academic resource with 62 staff members, a collection of 285 000 books and 1 208 periodicals. It is a partner in the Cape Library Consortium (CALICO), interacting daily with the libraries regionally, nationally and internationally.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for posts in the main library. We are looking for knowledgeable, self-motivated and service-driven persons, keen to work in a challenging environment. In addition, candidates should be flexible and enthusiastic to work in any section of the Library, with good supervisory, as well as interpersonal skills and ability to function effectively under pressure.
Senior Library Assistant:
Acquisitions Section
Responsibilities: * processing new orders, following up on claims
and generating status reports * liaising with Faculty librarians and
academic staff on the status of orders * supervising and overseeing
work of team member/s * generating and analysing monthly ordering reports.
Requirements: * at least three years’ library experience in the Acquisition
section of any library * a National Diploma in Library & Information
Studies or a Bachelors degree in Library & Information Science will
be an added advantage. The position further requires knowledge of
OCLC, as well as understanding of an automated Acquisitions Module
System, supervisory and good communication skills with ability to
work independently and in a team.
Senior Library Assistant:
Cataloguing Section
Responsibilities: * copy cataloguing of all library materials * authority
control (verifying subject/name headings, exporting authority records
into the library’s in-house system) * quality control (maintaining
bibliographic standards) * database management (re-cataloguing,
reclassification, editing of library records).
Requirements: * at least five years’ experience, preferably in an automated cataloguing section of any library * a National Diploma in Library & Information Science or a Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science will be an added advantage. The job further requires knowledge of AACR2, MARC21, Library of Congress Subject Headings and the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
