World Development Information Day Invitation, Western Cape, kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, 24- 25 October 2007
The General Assembly of the UN instituted World Development Information Day in 1972 to draw the attention of world public opinion to development problems and the need to strengthen international cooperation to solve them. The National Department of Social Development in conjunction with all Provincial Departments of Social Development decided to mark this day in 2007 in order to raise awareness and understanding of Information Management in the Social Development context. The goal of this day is to raise awareness of information as an enabler of sustainable social development with government bodies, service providers, communities and people.
This year World Development Information Day will be celebrated by holding an Indaba at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town.
This promise to be an interesting event on the theme of "Information for development", as well as the launch of development-related information tools. Various speakers from industry, government and academia will give talks on different topics, addressing issues on the use of information as a tool for the development of communities. Papers will cover topics on how the use of information can contribute to alleviate problems in specific fields of Social Development. During the product launch session new information products, which will simplify service delivery, will be showcased. People working in the information management and knowledge fields from government, academia, business, non-profit organizations and non-governmental organizations are invited to attend this free of charge event.

Internet Information Retrieval Course in Stellenbosch
The next Internet Information Retrieval and Personal Information Management Tools and Techniques short course will be presented again by Knowledge Leadership Associates and the University of Stellenbosch Centre for Knowledge Dynamics on 29 – 30th October 2007 in Stellenbosch.

Part-time LIS programme at UWC
To all who expressed interest in our proposed part-time BBibl to start
in 2008.
The good news is that we have received over 20 expressions of interest and so can safely proceed. So please now apply formally using the online form on the University of the Western Capes website. Make it clear that you are applying for the part-time programme. You will then be sent a letter of acceptance. Please look out for an email inviting you to a meeting at the end of January 2008 at registration time when we will welcome you & sort out class times. Please note:
* In 2008 we begin with BBibl I and will move on to BBibl II in 2009- and, so on. We cannot cater for those of you who might qualify to enter later years in 2008.
* Your programme in 2008 will comprise at least Library Science 111 in Semester 1 and Library Science 121 in Semester 2 . Each involves 2 lectures per week. You also should enroll for one or two BA subjects, each usually requiring 2 classes per week.
* LS 121 includes a series of computer literacy tuts. But if you are competent in MSWindows & its three applications, wordprocessing, spreadsheets and databases, then you might want to apply to be tested for exemption from these tuts. We will inform you how to go about this in the course of the year.
* Lectures are normally held between 5.30 and 8.30 pm. But we are open to your suggestions. If the majority of you prefer an early morning slot then we could manage that.
* In 2009 we probably will be introducing a new BLIS degree.
The courses you will do in 2008 will count towards this fresh new degree. And you will be transferred into the new degree.

IFLA book donation to Biblionef
On behalf of the Board of Biblionef South Africa, we would like to thank you most sincerely for the donation of books made to Biblionef at the recent IFLA World Library and Information Conference held in Durban. We are proud at Biblionef that we were chosen as the recipient of the books so kindly donated by individual IFLA members and conference attendees.
We will ensure that the books are put to good use and provide joy to children who do not normally have access to books, through distribution along with our Biblionef books. We will acknowledge the kindness of the donors by way of a sticker inside each book. The Western Cape Branch of LIASA is calling for nominations for the
2007 LIASA Western Cape Branch Award.
The LIASA Western Cape Branch Award recognizes an individual librarian or library team from any library (public, school, academic or special library) who has demonstrated exceptional creativity and resourcefulness in marketing, promoting and advocating for a single library or libraries in the Western Cape.
This award is aimed at recognizing and honouring the librarians for their creativity in the promotion and marketing of, as well as advocating for their libraries, through innovative and imaginative programmes, projects and events.
What type of programmes or projects would be considered?
We are looking for programmes or projects which include the promotion
and expansion or outreach of library services to the community where
it did not exist before or in response to community needs. These could
include:-
a.. support for educational programmes
b.. library programmes including promotion of library resources
c.. literacy, literature and reading programmes
d.. community outreach
e.. building or strengthening of local political, fiscal and public support
Criteria
All nominations will be evaluated on the following criteria:-
1. how innovative and imaginative the marketing was
2. the obstacles and challenges faced,
3. the partnerships developed
4. how creatively resources were used
5. the results obtained (outcomes)
6. how the library is using these results
7. sustainability
Only programmes or projects carried out from January to December 2006
are eligible.
Who may be nominated?
If an individual librarian is nominated, he/she should be a current
paid-up (2007) individual LIASA member. In the case of a library team
being nominated, at least one member of the library team should be a
current paid-up (2007) individual member.
Who may nominate?
Current paid-up (2007) Western Cape individual members may nominated individuals or library teams. Each entry must be accompanied by a written motivation from the nominator.
Judging Panel
The judging panel will comprise the Chair of the Western Cape Branch
of LIASA; the Public Relations Officer of the Western Cape Branch of
LIASA, or any other member of the Western Cape Branch Executive Committee;
the convenor or a representative from each of the active Western Cape
interest groups; Rheina Epstein, donor; and an independent marketing
specialist.
The decision of the judging panel is final, and no correspondence will
be entered into.
What do you need to do to enter?
1.. You must be a current paid-up (2007) member of LIASA or at least
one member of your team needs to a current paid-up member.
2.. You or your library team must be nominated by a current paid-up
(2007) member of LIASA. Each nomination must be accompanied by a
written motivation.
3.. Only programmes or projects carried out from January to December
2006 are eligible.
4.. Together with the proposer's written motivation, you need to
submit a portfolio which includes:-
a.. A written description of the programme expanding on the planning and execution, obstacles and challenges faced, the resources
used and the results obtained
b.. Statistical information about the library, including the community served, circulation figures and staffing must be included as this will be helpful in giving context to the written submission
c.. Supporting material such as brochures, testimonials, press clippings, flyers and photographs should be included to substantiate the nomination. (These will not be returned as they will be used in other advocacy or marketing activities by the Branch and relevant interest groups.)
5.. The individual or representative of the team that has been nominated should be available to provide further information either through interviews or site visits.

Judging Panel
The judging panel will comprise the Chair of the Western Cape Branch of LIASA; the Public Relations Officer of the Western Cape Branch of LIASA, or any other member of the Western Cape Branch Executive Committee; the convenor or a representative from each of the active Western Cape interest groups; Rheina Epstein, donor; and an independent marketing specialist.
The decision of the judging panel is final, and no correspondence will
be entered into.
What do you need to do to enter?
1.. You must be a current paid-up (2007) member of LIASA or at least
one member of your team needs to a current paid-up member.
2.. You or your library team must be nominated by a current paid-up
(2007) member of LIASA. Each nomination must be accompanied by a
written motivation.
3.. Only programmes or projects carried out from January to December
2006 are eligible.
4.. Together with the proposer's written motivation, you need to
submit a portfolio which includes:-
a.. A written description of the programme expanding on the
planning and execution, obstacles and challenges faced, the resources
used and the results obtained
b.. Statistical information about the library, including the
community served, circulation figures and staffing must be included as
this will be helpful in giving context to the written submission
c.. Supporting material such as brochures, testimonials, press
clippings, flyers and photographs should be included to substantiate
the nomination. (These will not be returned as they will be used in other
advocacy or marketing activities by the Branch and relevant interest
groups.)
5.. The individual or representative of the team that has been nominated should be available to provide further information either through interviews or site visits.

The South African Library for the Blind (Blindlib), which is situated in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, is a statutory institution registered under Act 91 of 1998. It is our mission to provide a free national library and information service to all blind and print handicapped readers in South Africa.

Institute on Scholarly Communication, hosted by the Consortium of
Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) December 5-7,
2007, in Chicago. This immersive learning experience, sponsored
jointly by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the
Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), prepares
participants to become local experts within their libraries.
Participants, who are encouraged to attend in teams, will become
fluent with scholarly communication issues and trends and will

Acceptance to the Illinois ARL/ACRL Institute on Scholarly

Articles dealing with "Children's Literature and Reading"
The due date for articles dealing with "Children's Literature and reading" to be published in Mousaion has been extended until 14 September 2007.
Mousaion, a journal on Librarianship and Information Science, will publish a special edition on children's literature and children's reading at the end of 2007.
All scholars, researchers and practitioners working in these multidisciplinary subject fields, e.g. disciplines such as education, sociology, psychology, antrhopology, languages, literature, religion and others are invited to submit articles. Literary scholars are welcome to apply their theories as long as the articles are readable and understandable to persons working in other subject fields as well.
Articles should be between 5 000 and 8 000 words and a structured abstract of 200 words should accompany each article. All articles shall be critically reviewed by at least two referees. The due date for the submission of articles for this proposed edication is 31 August 2007. Mousaion is published by the University of South Africa and accredited with the National Department of Education.
Depending on the success of the planned edition, the Editorial board of Mousaion will consider publishing such a special edition on children's literature and children's reading annually.

Part-time BBibl studies at UWC
The Department of Library & information Science at the University of the Western Cape is receiving queries about part-time evening studies for the whole degree rather than just the first year as things are at present. Evening studies clearly better meet the needs of full-time library staff wishing to gain professional qualifications.
We would very much like to set up a part-time programme for the whole degree starting with Year 1 in 2008 but the University insists that we have a minimum of 10 students enrolling.
So if you are interested, please let me know so I can see if there is any hope of reaching the 10 needed & so begin to plan.

The Library at the University of the Western Cape is a major academic resource with 62 staff members, a collection of 285 000 books and 1 208 periodicals. It is a partner in the Cape Library Consortium (CALICO), interacting daily with the libraries regionally, nationally and internationally.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for posts in the main library. We are looking for knowledgeable, self-motivated and service-driven persons, keen to work in a challenging environment. In addition, candidates should be flexible and enthusiastic to work in any section of the Library, with good supervisory, as well as interpersonal skills and ability to function effectively under pressure.
Senior Library Assistant:
Acquisitions Section
Responsibilities: * processing new orders, following up on claims
and generating status reports * liaising with Faculty librarians and
academic staff on the status of orders * supervising and overseeing
work of team member/s * generating and analysing monthly ordering reports.
Requirements: * at least three years’ library experience in the Acquisition
section of any library * a National Diploma in Library & Information
Studies or a Bachelors degree in Library & Information Science will
be an added advantage. The position further requires knowledge of
OCLC, as well as understanding of an automated Acquisitions Module
System, supervisory and good communication skills with ability to
work independently and in a team.
Senior Library Assistant:
Cataloguing Section
Responsibilities: * copy cataloguing of all library materials * authority
control (verifying subject/name headings, exporting authority records
into the library’s in-house system) * quality control (maintaining
bibliographic standards) * database management (re-cataloguing,
reclassification, editing of library records).
Requirements: * at least five years’ experience, preferably in an automated cataloguing section of any library * a National Diploma in Library & Information Science or a Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science will be an added advantage. The job further requires knowledge of AACR2, MARC21, Library of Congress Subject Headings and the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

Western Cape Librarian of the Year
Rose Damon, the Deputy Head of EDULIS, has been named the LIASA/SABINET Western Cape Librarian of the Year for 2007. Rose, a former college librarian and school library advisor, is extremely passionate about school libraries. Her passion inspired others to promote the establishment of functional libraries and resource centers at schools in the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). She demonstrates excellence in promoting library and information services especially in school libraries through her involvement in various projects. Rose was project manager for the implementation of the first EDULIS urban Mobile Library Service to schools in Khayelitsha and her work in this regard positively impacts on literacy development at rural schools. Currently, Rose’s continued advocacy has secured a grant of R40 million Rand for school library resources in the disadvantaged areas of the Western Cape. This resulted in her being appointed as project manager for QIDS-UP (the Quality, Improvement, Development, Support and Upliftment Programme).
Rose will now move on to the nationals to compete for the prestigious LIASA/SABINET Librarian of the Year Award. As the representative of the Western Cape branch, she is regarded a role model for all librarians in the Western Cape and someone whose contributions have made and continue to make a lasting impact on the sector. She will receive the LIASA/SABINET Western Cape Branch Librarian of the Year 2007 award at the Annual General Meeting of LIASA Western Cape to be held on Wednesday, 1 August 2007 at Milnerton Public Library.
The LIASA/SABINET National Librarian of the Year will be announced at a Gala Dinner to be held in Durban on 17 August 2007. The winner will be awarded a prize of R25 000 which is to be used for any educational purpose, such as visits to relevant institutions locally or internationally, for attending conferences in the library and information field or for study purposes. There is a second prize of R3000 and third of R2000. All finalists receive a floating trophy and a certificate of acknowledgement.

Happy Birthday, LIASA!
Dear LIASA Western Cape,
It seems a few days ago that we all made the big decision to become members of the only library and information association in the Western Cape, and in South Africa. By becoming members of LIASA, we became the mouth of this wonderful, strong body. Not only could we defend the LIS profession, but we became informed in many, if not all spheres of the LIS profession. We met other colleagues in other libraries during workshops. We attend workshops and conferences, and in our own workplaces we became fighters for the LIS profession. When our senior librarians told us we could not attend a workshop, we defy them by telling them that the libraries can still function with the non-members. By doing so, other non-members became members.
LIASA always has strong leaders. We all know our president by name. In the past, and today still, we can name our leaders by name, and we know who they are. We are informed.
I got the opportunity to become involved in LIASA Western Cape's Executive Committee. As a BEC member you get to learn more about the Association, you gained knowledge on how the rest of the country operates, how LIASA shapes the LIS profession in South Africa, and how influencial LIASA is in the rest of Africa, Europe and the USA. People know about the wonderful work that all of us do in South Africa, and they still want to know, even here in the USA, how the different Library and Information organisations became one so easily.
One just needs to make that step by saying "YES!" I, and every body else on the different committees did not know all the answers, but you learn through strong, informed and radical leadership.I cannot enough show my gratitude towards Tommy Matthee, who always had the time to show me how to balance the books, gave me the courage to present the Financial statement at a BEC meeting and later present at the End of year meetings.
Being a LIASA member helped me a lot when I came to the USA. I could talk informedly about the LIS profession, I could stand up infront of my peers and present a workshop with all the technolgy that I have here at my disposal, and I can now say that in the ten years of LIASA, that we all have grown with our profession and in our profession.
Thank you for all the opportunities in LIASA!

The grant will cover registration fees, travel and accommodation if residing outside KwaZulu Natal.
Closing Date for applications: 16 July 2007
Criteria:
. Must be employed in a library or if unemployed, should have an LIS qualification
. Must be a paid up individual member of LIASA
. Application form must be supported by Head of Institution,
acknowledging leave will be granted to the candidate for purposes of attending IFLA (employed librarians);
